Are you wondering why the “teen vaping epidemic” is everywhere?
Article by: Machelle Blackmer
Recently, I have seen a large group of adult smokers being influenced through social media by their peers to switch from traditional combustible cigarettes to electronic cigarettes. I decided to provide some links to information available on chemical comparison for direct scientific information. What I found led me down an entirely different rabbit hole.
I searched phrases such as “Chemical comparison of cigarette vs e-cigarette, cigarette vs electronic cigarette, and vaping vs smoking chemicals”. Getting results directly related to my search terms was very frustrating. The most frequent result I received was the website https://truthinitiative.org/ which was the top-rated Google result and www.nhi.com which was the second most common page. The Truth Initiative’s main campaign is TheTruth.com
Searching chemical comparison of e-cigarettes on www.thetruth.com , an anti-smoking site, you see titles like ”E-CIGARETTES HAVE HAD SOME QUALITY-CONTROL ISSUES. PLUS, MOST E-CIGS CONTAIN ADDICTIVE NICOTINE, AND CARCINOGENS HAVE BEEN FOUND IN SOME E-CIG VAPOR. HOW ABOUT WE GET SOME MORE RESEARCH AND REGULATION UP IN HERE?” and “SOME STUDIES HAVE FOUND VAPES TO CONTAIN LEAD, NICKEL, TIN, SILVER, FORMALDEHYDE, MANGANESE, TOLUENE, AND OTHER CHEMICALS LINKED TO CANCER AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM PROBLEMS.”
These articles all contain links to other webpages* with studies saying: “The aerosol contained particles >1 µm(micrometre) comprised of tin, silver, iron, nickel, aluminum, and silicate and nanoparticles (<100 nm) of tin, chromium, and nickel.”* or “Novel Nicotine Delivery Systems and Public Health: The Rise of the “E-Cigarette”*
Actual charts, comparison tables, graphs, and other easily understood material is lacking. Making it difficult for current cigarette smokers to get a clear look at the harm or benefit of switching to E-cigarettes or ENDS.
I looked into The Truth Initiative
The Truth Initiative is a nonprofit health organization dedicated to making tobacco use a thing of the past. This is not in the interest of the organization. From what I can tell their funding hinges on MSA payments that fluctuate with cigarette sales. As of 2016, they had $957 million in assets.
The Truth Initiative Led me to MSA
The Truth Initiative organization was founded in 1999 as a result of the Master Settlement Agreement or MSA. The MSA was a record-breaking civil suit between 46 states and major tobacco companies. The companies agreed to cease certain marketing practices, as well as, pay in perpetuity(forever), various annual payments to the states to cover medical expenses for smoking-related illnesses, among other things. The sum $206 billion over the first 25 years of the agreement.
These payments made to the states did not actually cover all smoking-related illnesses nor did the states pay off all smokers medical bills relating to smoking illnesses. In fact, not a single person with a smoking-related illness saw any benefit from these payments, including having their medical debt relieved.
Reading through the MSA is difficult but, bullet points at the end make one thing exceptionally clear: The amount of money that the Participating Manufacturers are required to annually contribute to the states varies according to several factors. All payments are based primarily on the number of cigarettes sold in the USA.
What this tells me is The Truth Initiative is directly funded by payments made from big tobacco. If the “teen vaping epidemic” continues, no one will be smoking combustible cigarettes in 30 years. If combustible cigarettes cease to be sold this $957 million dollar (non-profit) organization will cease to be funded. Their driving message “Tobacco Stops With Me” will no longer apply. It explains why there is a push on this “teen vaping epidemic”. Vapers are no longer purchasing cigarettes. And everyone who benefits from the MSA is feeling the pinch.
